Insights from Nonprofit Changemakers: A Reflection from Gooder Stories Podcast

Earlier this year, I took a leap and started a podcast — something I honestly never imagined doing.

Gooder Storieswhere strategy meets heart is a space where I sit down with changemakers from across Canada’s nonprofit sector to explore how marketing can move missions forward.

Now, ten episodes later, I’m wrapping up season one with a reflection on why I started this journey and what I’ve learned along the way, plus answering some of the questions from my past guests. You can find the episode here:

While putting together the final episode of season one, I looked back on all nine conversations and pulled together my guests’ best insights on what makes marketing and communications truly effective. Here’s a quick recap of the insights:

6. Evolve and adjust

  • Don’t keep telling the same story or using the same strategy forever.

  • Track what’s working (and what’s not) through metrics and community feedback.

  • Experiment. Stay curious. Stay creative.

7. Power in community

  • Partnership and collaboration go a long way.

  • Partner with like-minded organizations and individuals.

  • Prioritize collaboration over competition.

  • Balance giving and asking; offer value generously.

8. Empower your team

  • Recognize each team member’s unique strengths and skills.

  • Be resourceful, responsive, and creative with what you have.

9. Self-care is a necessity

  • Lean on your support system.

  • Know when to take breaks.

  • It’s okay to not be okay. Set boundaries.

  • Take care of yourself so you can care for others.

  • Go back to what fills you up to recharge.

10. Stand out through storytelling and design

  • You don’t need to be the loudest—just the most authentic.

  • Deep, meaningful storytelling combined with thoughtful design helps your organization rise above the noise.

  • Be clear on your objective and purpose behind every piece of communication.

1. Identify your audience

  • Know who you’re talking to, what they care about, and the best way to reach them.

  • Understand what value you bring to them and why your message matters.

2. Craft clear, focused messages

  • Keep it simple. Avoid jargon.

  • Align your message with your audience’s background and what they can relate to.

  • Tailor messages to each group’s needs, and make sure what you share is worth their time.

3. Approach every story with dignity and integrity

  • Tell stories ethically, authentically, and inclusively.

  • Celebrate the people you serve, the volunteers, and the donors who make the impact possible.

  • Respect the people whose stories you tell—let them be the heroes, not the organization.

4. Build a strong, aligned brand

  • Have a visual identity and messaging that clearly connect back to your mission and values.

  • Keep your tone and visuals consistent so your brand feels unified and trustworthy.

5. Build trust through storytelling and transparency

  • Be honest, consistent, and responsive.

  • Trust grows through word of mouth and how your community experiences your work.

  • Show up, listen, and engage meaningfully.

Wrapping up season one is both humbling and energizing. The insights and inspiring stories shared by my guests reaffirm why storytelling matters in driving meaningful change. Stay tuned for what’s next in season two of Gooder Stories.
